Thanksgiving Mail

Life Coach Advice

As we rush through our lives to unknown places, we forget many of the things that bring value to our lives. With how many friends have you lost touch? When was the last time you appreciated the people in your life and told them?

In today’s world with phones, cell phones, Instant messaging and email, we are so in touch that we are out of touch. Communication is so high-speed that it can speed right by us. There’s a huge difference between getting an email and getting a card. When you take the time to go to a card shop, pick a card, write something in it and mail it, you are really showing someone that he or she counts. It wasn’t easy nor was it quick; it showed you cared. It’s also amazing.

There’s something special about getting a card in the mail. It’s like a surprise that took time to arrive. The value seems to grow as it travels through the mail system. Through rain, snow or sleet there are people working to get you that card. A whole system and country seems to be behind the card getting to you, all the way back to the days of the old west, when the pony express raced across the countryside, risking life and safety to bring you that card.

Yes, a card is special, and at this time of Thanksgiving we should slow down and decide to really be thankful for those who bring meaning to our lives. This Thanksgiving, let’s think about the people whom we are thankful for and let them know. Take the time and go card shopping. Buy as many cards as you can think of people to whom you should send them, even to people you know only casually for it would be fun to brighten their day. Then, actually add to the card by writing something yourself. Don’t create pressure on yourself, it as easy as just saying, “I wanted you to know this Thanksgiving how thankful I am that you are part of my life.”

Even if you are married or live with someone, mail them a card. It will really mean something when it comes through the mail, and to the person in your life when they get it. Don’t tell people you sent them a card. Let it be a surprise and enjoy the impact. They will know that they are important, and they will feel special, and you will feel good about it. As John Donne put it, “Sir, more than kisses, letters mingle souls. For thus friends absent speak.”

At the end of the day, it’s not what we have but whom we have to share life with that counts. So let’s be thankful about the people in our lives with Thanksgiving mail.

Deep Stack Sit and Go Poker – Middle Stages Level

After losing a few pots, and a few thousand poker chips from my stack, I was below average chips, but still had 40-50 BB’s. Two of the 11 starting poker players had been knocked out already, both with pocket aces losing to a set. They didn’t know how to protect their hand properly, and wound up getting involved for all of their chips unnecessarily. This meant that a few players were approaching 20k in chips, and I only had about 2/3 of the average stack. This is normally the time to play tight and aggressive, but instead I loosened up a bit. I still made late position calls with q,9 or j,10 and tried to pick up big pots that no one hit. My one big mistake in this level was making a large (more than 3x) raise with 7c8c in early position. A strong player reraised me, and though I was getting appropriate odds to call as long as he didn’t have an over pair, I didn’t really have enough money to call his raise and miss. So, I decided to fold, and sit on a short stack of about 5k.

Antes began kicking in, and someone said something to the degree of, “now it’s going to get interesting.” This hand I picked up AQ off suit. I had 4,200 and the blinds were 300/600 with a 50 ante. I open shoved. Everyone folded to the big blind and he called the 3600 more with A,10. He had between 15k and 20k at the start of the hand, so the call wouldn’t hurt him much. I won the hand and was back up to near my starting stack, but obviously still below average.

Now I actually tightened up, and watched a few of the poker players get knocked out. Even though I was short stacked, I realized that I could use my chips very effectively. I made a few pushed when I had big aces 6 or 7 handed and chipped up, but other than that stayed out of the way.

One mis-step of mine was trying to play pocket 7’s for a standard raise. I got 2 callers and it came out j,6,6. The person in first position led out, I folded, and a another player called, checking down the river – Q,J and J,10 were their hands. 5 don’t mind playing speculative cards for raises sometimes, because if it gets multiway and I miss, it often ends up with two players getting involved in a big hand; bigger than if I just let them limp in. Part of my goal in this sit and go is to let other people beat each other up. I’m good heads up, so with a little luck, I know I can overcome a chip disadvantage.

Harry Potter-ific Party

One of the most popular theme parties these days involves the world of Harry Potter. Parties can be for kids or adults, birthdays or any occasion. Make it a costume party for even more fun.

Invitations for Harry Potter theme parties can be in the shape of a wand, Harry’s round shape glasses or Harry Potter himself. Party supply stores have invitations, plates, napkins and cups to match the whole Harry Potter theme. Crepe paper and balloons can be bought in black, blue, silver or gray to match the magical world Harry lives in.

If you have the guests come in costume, hand out prizes for best costume. Take pictures of everyone as a group and an individual portrait to send in a note after the party. It will give them an added momento to remember it by.

Have a real magician come to your theme party. He can imitate tricks done by the wizard or just practice his own style of magic. Kids and adults are fascinated by good tricks. Get magic books from the library and have everybody perform their own tricks for entertainment. Make it a contest on who can perform the best magic trick.

Other crafts to do would be to make Harry Potter glasses using black pipe cleaners. Use blue paper and glitter and everybody makes a wizard hat. If you are daring with a group of kids, give them all dowels that can be transformed into magic wands. Use sequins or stickers to give them extra flash.

Games to play at your Harry Potter theme party can include hide the wizard hat, pin the spell book into Harry’s hands or Harry Potter trivia. Make a bunch of questions from all of the books and movies and see who knows the most about Harry Potter.
